About Dr. April Ward
I understand that reaching out for support often comes after months - or even years - of trying to cope alone. My role is to help you make sense of what's happening, understand the factors that may be contributing, and find a way forward that feels right for you and your family.
My mission to support parents comes from 15 years working across NHS services, including mother, infant and child mental health, where I saw again and again how little support is available for parents.
Understanding my own family background, and then becoming a parent myself, deepened my commitment to creating accessible, holistic support that benefits the whole family.
About Dr. April Ward
I'm Dr April Ward, a clinical psychologist, parent, and passionate advocate for supporting the emotional wellbeing of children, parents, and families.
For over 15 years, I've worked within NHS services specialising in maternal, infant, child, and family mental health. During this time, I've supported families through a wide range of emotional, behavioural, and relationship challenges, helping parents better understand their children, strengthen family relationships, and feel more confident in navigating the ups and downs of family life.
Since a young age, I've had a deep fascination with what shapes who we become in adulthood. I've always felt things deeply and my relationships have always been really important to me. I’ll admit I have a tendency to be a worrier, which at times can play out in my parenting and I’m aware this is a part of me I have to manage in my life. Before becoming a parent I was a go-getter. I worked hard and played hard and it’s taken both practical adjustment and a big dose of compassion to adapt to parenthood. I still mourn my pre-parent life, which is OK, but I wouldn't change it, as I've grown in so many other ways. This is the roller coaster of emotions that comes with being a parent.
I hold a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). While my professional training has shaped the way I understand people, becoming a parent shaped me in ways no textbook ever could. Like many of the parents I work with, I've experienced the joy, exhaustion, guilt, uncertainty, and deep unwavering love that comes with raising children. It's reinforced something I believe wholeheartedly: children don't need perfect parents, and families don't need perfection to thrive. What helps is feeling understood, supported, and equipped with the right tools when things feel hard.

As part of my commitment to making psychological knowledge accessible, I have also contributed expert commentary to BBC Radio Kent and BBC News Kent on topics relating to parenting. As a clinical psychologist and parent, I'm increasingly aware of the role technology plays in family life. My doctoral thesis explored the impact of social media on children's self esteem and identity development, and I continue to have a strong interest in helping children, young people, and parents develop healthy and balanced relationships with screens, social media, and technology.
Growing up, I saw first-hand the positive impact that committed, caring parents can have when they choose to create a different future for their children. That experience shaped my belief that change is possible for every family. We cannot eliminate life's challenges, but we can develop the understanding, skills, and support needed to navigate them together.
By addressing our past and its impact on our present, we can help to shape a better future for us and for our children. Whether you're seeking support for yourself, your child, or your family, my goal is to help you feel understood, empowered, and equipped with practical strategies that lead to meaningful and lasting change.
When I'm not working, you'll usually find me spending time with my family, enjoying the coast, or making time for the friendships and interests that help keep me grounded. I've learned that caring for ourselves as a parent isn't a luxury, it's an essential part of caring for those we love.
If you're ready to take the next step, I'd love to hear from you.
We believe that…
Everyone Is Doing Their Best
We believe children want to do well, and parents do too. When things aren't working, we look beneath the surface with curiosity and compassion rather than blame or judgement.
Behaviour is Communication
Whether it's a tantrum, a shutdown, anxiety, anger or defiance, behaviour is communication. We help families understand what emotions and needs may be sitting underneath the behaviours they see.
Connection Comes Before Correction
Strong relationships are the foundation of emotional wellbeing. We prioritise helping children and parents feel understood, safe and connected, because lasting change grows from connection, not control.
There Is No Such Thing as a Perfect Parent
Parenting is hard. We believe good parenting isn't about getting it right all the time. It's about repairing, learning and showing up again and again, even after difficult moments.
Understanding Creates Change
When children understand themselves, and parents understand their children more deeply, families thrive. We help make sense of challenges so that change feels possible, practical and sustainable.
“I found the sessions incredibly useful; they have offered me a supportive, kind caring environment in which I felt safe to share what's happening in my life as a new mother. April is so knowledgeable, kind and compassionate, she has been nurturing to both myself and my daughter, I cant thank her enough. I think her guidance and support has given me more strength that I needed so much. She provided a safe container to learn about parenting and also share experiences with helpful, non judgemental feedback.”
